The 5 most important questions to ask your insurance agent (and why they matter)

If you're searching for “questions to ask my insurance agent,” you've taken the first smart step toward protecting your finances and your family. Insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. So asking the right questions can help you avoid coverage gaps, unexpected expenses, and a policy that doesn't reflect your actual needs. Below are the five most important questions you should be asking, why each one matters, and what I recommend as an experienced agent to help you feel confident knowing you have the right policy for you.

1. Do I have enough coverage?

This is hands down the most important question you should be asking. Many people default to the cheapest policy or buy state-minimum coverage online without understanding the long-term risks.

Why it matters: Inadequate coverage can leave you personally responsible for medical bills or legal judgments—and bankruptcy doesn't always erase those obligations. A knowledgeable agent will tailor coverage to your assets, lifestyle, and level of risk.

What I recommend: Always go over your coverages with your agent and understand what they mean. For my clients, I always give a quick crash course in liability limits and I make sure we personalize their policy to fit their specific needs.

2. What do I do when I have a claim?

Before making any claim, contact your insurance agent. This is especially important for home insurance claims. Your agent will help you file the claim and follow up with the carrier. They can also help you understand how it might affect your record and/or rate.

Why it matters: Claims can affect your future premiums and eligibility with certain insurers.

What I recommend: Always talk to your agent before making any claim. That's what we're here for. We can walk you through everything you need to know and help you navigate your options.

3. What's the right deductible for me?

When it comes to deductibles, we all know that higher deductibles usually mean cheaper insurance. But...is it always better? A good insurance agent will calculate the real savings and discuss your financial situation. Often small premium savings don't justify a high deductible if it would be a financial strain after an accident.

Why it matters: Higher deductibles usually mean lower premiums, but they can increase your out-of-pocket expenses.

What I recommend: Some initial questions I usually ask my clients:

  • Can you afford that deductible if something happens tomorrow?”
  • “Would it be a stretch financially if you had two accidents in a single month?”
  • “How much are you really saving by having a higher deductible?”

4. Should I avoid state minimum coverage?

Every state has different requirements, and it's important to fully understand the coverage you're getting before settling for the state minimum.

Why it matters: State-minimum limits are often inadequate to cover serious injuries or property damage.

What I recommend: Talk to your agent and ask them what they recommend based on your specific needs. I usually tell my clients that, at minimum, they should go one step up from the state requirement.

5. Should I use an agent or just buy my policy online?

You go to a professional to fix your car, to do your taxes, and for almost every other financial need in your life. So why would you not go to one for something as important as insurance?

Why it matters: One of the benefits of working directly with a local insurance agent is that you won't need to waste hours translating insurance jargon. At Comparion, our agents know insurance inside and out and will walk you through step by step.

What I recommend: Go for a local agent who can help you get the right coverage at the right price. Online quotes can be generic and miss important discounts and coverage options.
